I’m leading a pre-conference workshop on data visualization at the National Hemophilia Foundation’s 2015 Annual Meeting.

About the National Hemophilia Foundation

The National Hemophilia Foundation (NHF) is dedicated to finding better treatments and cures for inheritable bleeding disorders and to preventing the complications of these disorders through education, advocacy and research. Established in 1948, the National Hemophilia Foundation has chapters throughout the country. Its programs and initiatives are made possible through the generosity of individuals, corporations and foundations as well as through a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Learn more about the National Hemophilia Foundation at https://www.hemophilia.org/.

About the Annual Meeting

Whether you’re a first timer or an old timer, NHF’s annual gathering of the entire bleeding disorders community in the US offers participants three key elements: an array of educational sessions, a hands-on Exhibit Hall with fun for all ages and social events where you can unwind each day.

Every year families and individuals with bleeding disorders look forward to dozens of sessions on everything from parenting issues, dealing with inhibitors and transition stages to hepatitis C advancements, advocacy updates, research breakthroughs and other timely topics. Programs for children, teens and young adults mean the next generation of people with bleeding disorders is nurtured, encouraged and emboldened to represent the community.

RTP Evaluators Presents: A Data Visualization Workshop with Ann K. Emery

Research Triangle Park Evaluators (RTP Evaluators) is an affiliate of the American Evaluation Association for evaluators, researchers, and social scientists in North Carolina’s research triangle. Learn more on their blog and through their LinkedIn page.

This workshop is hosted by RTP Evaluators but is open to everyone, both members and non-members. Join us in Durham, North Carolina!

Workshop Agenda

Visualizing data through charts, tables, and diagrams helps you deliver bite-sized information that viewers will understand at a glance and retain for the long run. During this hands-on workshop, we’ll focus on practical considerations: designing with stakeholders’ information needs front and center, using readily available software like Microsoft Excel, and thinking through a dozen chart types—dot plots, small multiples, heat maps, and more—that can be applied to your own research and evaluation projects.

During this 4-hour workshop, we’ll walk through a step-by-step data visualization design process:

Introduction to Data Visualization: Key Players, Latest Trends, Skills Needed

Who’s My Audience? Numeracy Level, Time, Interest, Information Needs

How Will I Share My Charts? Reports, Visual Executive Summaries, In-Person Presentations, Meeting Handouts, Slidedocs, Dashboards, Infographics

Which Chart is Best for My Data? Pros and Cons of 30+ Essential Charts and Chart Choosing Tips

Which Tool is Best? Strengths of the Big 3: Excel, Tableau, R

Which Formatting Edits Are Needed? Each section begins with a discussion followed by hands-on practice. For example, after the color section, we practice choosing custom color palettes and applying those RGB codes to our graphs.

Removing Clutter: Borders, Grid Lines, Tick Marks

Telling a Story with Text: Titles, Subtitles, Annotations

Effective Labeling: Direct Labeling, Using Labels Sparingly

Color: Custom Palettes, Action Colors, Colorblindness

Advanced Chart Construction in Microsoft Excel: Strategies for building chart types that aren’t traditionally available in Excel, like small multiples bar charts, panel charts, and dot plots.

After the workshop, you’ll be able to apply both the big-picture critical thinking skills and the detailed technical skills to your own datasets.

Skills You’ll Gain

You’ll practice tweaking Excel’s default settings, for example, to order your graphs from greatest to least rather than alphabetically. You’ll also learn to produce advanced visualizations within Excel, like the heat table shown below.

What to Bring

This workshop is highly interactive. Please bring laptops and power cords. The instructor will be demonstrating techniques on a PC with Excel 2013.

Snacks and beverages are provided; please bring a bag lunch or eat lunch prior to the workshop.

I'm leading a half-day hands-on data visualization workshop at the Eastern Evaluation Research Society's annual conference.

The Eastern Evaluation Research Society presents: A Data Visualization Workshop with Ann K. Emery

The Eastern Evaluation Research Society (EERS) is the oldest professional society for program evaluators in the United States. Founded in 1978, EERS remains a vibrant contributor to program evaluation practice and theory. A fully-fledged affiliate of the American Evaluation Association (AEA), the purpose of EERS is to promote key goals of the profession in our region.

This pre-conference workshop is open to anyone who registers for the EERS15 conference. Join us in Absecon, New Jersey!

Workshop Agenda

A common misconception is that evaluators need to be computer programmers or graphic designers before diving into visualization. On the contrary, high-quality visualizations can be created in good ol’ Excel. We’ll breeze through data visualization best practices and then dive into the fun stuff: creating advanced charts in Excel. Together we’ll design heat tables, bubble charts, diverging stacked bar charts, spark lines, dot plots, slope graphs, and small multiples and panel layouts, just to name a few. You’ll leave with the critical thinking skills and technical prowess needed to create visualizations faster and easier than you ever thought was possible.

Skills You’ll Gain

You’ll practice tweaking Excel’s default settings, for example, to transform this vertical bar chart into a horizontal bar chart. You’ll also learn to produce advanced visualizations within Excel, like the small multiples bar chart shown below.

Save the date! On Thursday, December 11, I'll be co-leading a data visualization workshop with Stephanie Evergreen in Washington, DC.

Have you ever emailed a report to a client and wondered whether they even read about the results? Have you tried sharing results during in-person meetings only to watch their eyes glaze over? If so, this half-day workshop is for you. As data becomes easier and cheaper to collect, the sheer volume of information available to us (and to our clients) can become overwhelming. Visualizing data through charts, graphs, and diagrams is one strategy for delivering bite-sized information that stakeholders can understand at a glance and retain for the long run.

Ann Emery and Stephanie Evergreen will discuss how to select appropriate chart types; emphasize key findings with color; and take the guesswork out of your graphs through titles, subtitles, and annotations. We’ll focus on researcher-specific considerations: designing with stakeholders’ information needs front and center, using readily available software like Microsoft Excel, and thinking through a dozen chart types—dot plots, small multiples, heat maps, and more—that can be applied to the social sciences. We’ll conclude with strategies for sharing visualizations through videos, handouts, slidedocs, social media, and dashboards. You’ll leave with the critical thinking skills and technical prowess needed to create visualizations faster and easier than you ever thought was possible.

After our workshop, you’ll be able to:

Describe recent trends in data visualization;

Explore preliminary patterns by sketching charts by hand and via sparklines and conditional formatting in Excel;

Weigh the pros and cons of presenting data through various chart types (e.g., clustered bar charts versus dot plots);

Reduce chart clutter by adjusting borders, grid lines, and tick marks;

Emphasize key findings with color;

Write titles, subtitles, and annotations that summarize desired takeaway messages;

Review drafts of visualizations that were created by you or one of your colleagues; and

Identify which communications mode(s) are best for sharing charts (e.g., reports, handouts, presentations, etc.).
