Visualizing data through charts, tables, and diagrams helps you deliver bite-sized information that viewers will understand at a glance and retain for the long run. This 60-minute webinar is truly a crash course in data visualization. You’ll learn what data visualization is, how it works, and key players and trends in the field. Then we’ll walk through a step-by-step design process so you can apply the critical thinking skills to your own projects. First, we’ll discuss how to match your visualization to your viewers’ information needs and interests and which dissemination format is best for your project (reports, handouts, dashboards, GIFs, or animated videos, just to name a few possible communications modes). Then you’ll get an introduction to chart choosing skills, like how to swap out your overused pie charts and bar charts for options like slope charts, tree maps, social network maps, or dot plots. The next step in the design process is selecting the correct tool for the job. We’ll talk about the pros and cons of Excel, Tableau, and R for data visualization. Finally, we’ll conclude with best practices for formatting your charts, like summarizing your takeaway messages in the title, removing chart clutter so that viewers’ attention is focused on your data, and ensuring that your color scheme is legible for people with colorblindness.
Formed on July 4, 1838, the Alumni Association of the University of Virginia was the sixth such group organized in the United States.
The Alumni Association keeps its members and friends involved in the University’s present. No matter how far away (either in time or location) alumni have traveled from Charlottesville, their views on the governance of today’s University are represented.
The Alumni Association assists and encourages connections between alumni and students by hosting joint discussions on the Honor System, cosponsoring alumni-student job fairs, administering the U.Va. fund, sending alumni association members, friends and family the Alumni News magazine quarterly, and overseeing other important initiatives and activities. Through active involvement with the Association while still on Grounds, students are cultivated to assume the mantle of “university caretaker” when they become alumni. In partnership with the University of Virginia, and through its own mission and goals, the Alumni Association plays an active role in the institution’s future as well.
Presented by UVa alumni who are experts in their fields, Friday Forum Webinars bring you timely information to enhance your professional, career and personal success.
Registration is limited to UVa alumni and parents of UVa students. Register at http://alumni.virginia.edu/career-services/webinars-events/.
Wish you could attend, but not a UVA alum? Let’s talk about scheduling a webinar just for your organization.
